By Road - The Charente is well served by the French road network. Access times vary according to your port of entry.

  • St Malo - 5 hours
  • Cherbourg - 6 hours
  • Caen - 5 hours
  • Le Harve - 6 hours
  • Ferry/Le Shuttle - 6-7 hour - Our regular port of entry with two route options from Calais
  • Take the A16 to West to join the A28 at Abbeville. From there it's the fantasitic new A28 that takes you via Rouen/Le Mans/Tours. Pick up the A10 to Poitiers and just south of Poitiers pick up the N10 signposted Angloueme.
  • Take a short trip on the A16 East to join A26 South to Arras and from there the mightly A1/10 signposted Paris. Go round Paris and follow the signs to Bordeaux via the A10 and just south of Poitiers pick up the N10 signposted Angloueme.

    By Rail - Eurostar and Rail Europe carry you all the way to the Charente. Routes are via either Paris or Lille with connecting trains to the Charente area. Be warned if you go via Paris in order to change trains you must also change stations.

    From our experience we think the best route is London to Lille because you change trains but not stations. There are frequent trains to Poitiers or if you want to get even closer you might change one more time in Poitiers to get to Ruffec.

    Just opposite the rail station at Poitiers is an Avis car rental desk who occasionally offer discounts. There are no known car hire facilities at Ruffec.

    By Air - There are regular flights to airports at Poitiers, La Rochelle, Limoges and Bordeaux via Ryan Air, Easy Jet, FlyBe, BA. A number of small regional airlines also fly to Angloueme. Please consult independent airlines and travel agents for details. (Poitiers is 45 mins north and Bordeaux is 1.5 hours south, Limoges 1.5 hours East, La Rochelle 1.5 hours West of La Maison D'Hibou).

    By Sea - Although the odds of anyone wishing to arrive by sea are slim, the nearest port(s) are around the La Rochelle area approximately 1.5 hours from La Maison D'Hibou.
